There is nothing like the taste or freshly made warm fish pie in the cold autumn and winter months. Although I love Fish Pie now, I have to admit that I never appreciated it when I lived in Malaysia as the weather was just too hot to enjoy this rich and creamy dish. Now, most families in England have their own version and secret ingredients to create the most delicious fish pie. Some use sliced eggs to pad out the pie or chopped seafood such as prawns. Others serve peas on the side or add it into the pie itself. There are also many different herbs as well which elevates this simple dish, I personally tend to add parsley, chives, dill and bay leaves (or whatever herbs I have growing in the garden).
Traditionally British people love to use a mix of white fish, salmon and smoked cod, if you pop into your fish monger on a Thursday or Friday you can easily get the fish pie mix. I tend to use only white meaty fish such as Cod when I make my pie. I have perfected this recipe over the years and this is something I make often as Friday is considered Fish Day for us. If you are not sure on how to make mashed potatoes, follow instruction here.
Here’s a short youtube video on how to make the Fish Pie.

Ingredients
- Cod Fish (This weighs about 700g)
- 2 Boiled Eggs (optional)
- 1 Bowl of fresh Prawns/Seafood (optional)
- Dash of Nutmeg
- A Selection of Herbs (Parsley/Dill/Chives/Bay Leaves)
- 40g Butter
- 1 tbsp Flour
- 1 cup Milk
- 1/2 cup Single Cream
- 1 Onion studded with a handful of cloves
- 1/2 cup Frozen Peas
Instructions
1. Add the fish, bay leaves, onions (studded with cloves), cream and milk into a pan.

2. Cook in low heat till fish is slightly cooked through (You do not want to overcook the fish or it will be chewy)

3. Remove fish and place in a oven proof bowl and sieve the milk to keep aside

4. Wash same pan. Heat butter, add the flour and whisk it to make a roux, stir for a few minutes so the flour gets cooked. Then add in the milk and stir till the bechamel sauce gets nice and thick.

5. Add in a pinch of nutmeg, chopped herbs, salt, pepper and peas. Stir and turn off the heat.

6. Layer the prawns on the fish and at this point you also layer the sliced boiled egg (sorry my eggs got eaten by the kids before I could do it lol)

7. Once the sauce thickens, then pour it over the fish

8. Cover the pie with mashed potatoes and use a fork to create a nice pattern on it. Bake in a 180C fan oven for about 30 minutes, do keep a watch towards the end so the top does not burn. You know its done when your mash has a firm to touch texture and has a beautiful golden colour to it.

This has got my mouth watering – I haven’t had a fish pie in so long and I have never tried making my own! I might just give this recipe a go!

Agree, this is such a comforting food perfect for cool weather
I’ve made a cottage pie like this but never a fish pie which is odd as both of us like fish. I may have to give this a go now it’s getting colder outside x
Yes do give it a go, you will love it
I love a good fish pie. I like to add lots of seafood to mine too though. My mam used to cook fish pie every Friday when I was small.
