Apple sauce or applesauce is a sauce made from apples. It can be made with peeled or unpeeled apples and you can add spices or sweeten it according to your preference. Apple Sauce is the perfect accompaniment to traditional roast pork, ham or sausages as I find that having a dollop of this just elevates the dish. After almost 5 months of not getting hold of any Bramley Apples at the Farmer’s Market I was gifted these homegrown apples. So I will be putting them to good use by making batches of Apple Sauce and to freeze them for our next meal. You can also make the sauce using Granny Smith apples (if you can’t find Bramley Apples where you live), but I find that they don’t break down easily and Bramley Apples taste nicer. It is easy to spot Bramley apples as they tend to look a lot larger than Granny Smith apples.

It is super easy to make this recipe and freeze them in batches. I always date-label mine so I know which ones to use up first. You can easily freeze the apple sauce for up to a year. Do remember to warm the sauce if they have been frozen and then it get to room temperature before serving it. The amount of sugar depends on how tart the apples are and how much you are making. There are no rules to this, as I have made using just 2 apples and 1-2 tablespoon of sugar. Would recommend removing the cinnamon bark halfway through cooking or use a smaller piece if you are not keen on a strong cinnamon flavour.

Ingredients
- 3-4 lbs Peeled, cored and quartered apples
- 1 Lemon (Juice & Peel)
- 1/2 cup Castor Sugar (You can mix brown sugar if you like)
- 1 cup Water
- 1/2 tsp Salt
Instructions
1. Peel and chop the apples

2. Add the apples, cinnamon bark, lemon peel, lemon juice and water into the pot

3. Add the sugar (I tend to add half then go by taste as we don't like it too sweet)

4. Cook it for 20-30 minutes till they break down. Use the masher to mash it down it you want a super smooth sauce. I like it with a bit of texture in mine and serve.

I’ve always wanted to make apple sauce but have never got around to making it for some reason. This post has just reawaken that desire. This looks delicious and you made it look so easy.
Yes it is so easy, glad I have inspired you
Mmm my mother always makes me this but I didn’t realise it was so easy to make myself, I guess there is a first time for everything!
Yes it is, and next time you can make a batch for her
I have never tried making apple sauce myself. I am scared I would be wasting the ingredients. But your recipe makes it seem so easy to make. I will try a small batch first. If I make it perfect, I will start making more and give them to friends and family.
You can make with just 1 or 2 apples if you like
I love making applesauce, this looks like a fun way to do it. I need to make some soon, the apples will be coming in.
Yes they are in season now, so hope you make some
Growing up my mom and I used to make homemade apple sauce all the time because we had so many apple trees in our backyard. It was the best! I’ve not made my own in such a long time…it is so easy and so good!
Hope the post has brought back a lot of great memories and you do try to make some apple sauce for yourself sometime soon
I am loving this and will have to try and make some homemade applesauce for myself. I have pinned the recipe and appreciate you sharing it as I love that you can control what goes in to your own batch like…less sugar 🙂
Exactly, I always feel making things from scratch gives you the ability to control the sugar and choose organic ingredients
Those scones sound amazing! I’m not very well today and am sitting feeling sorry for myself, now I know what I need to cheer me up!
